Warren grew because of what sits on Mound Road and Van Dyke. The General Motors Global Technical Center, the assembly and supplier plants along Van Dyke, and the Detroit Arsenal drew tens of thousands of workers in the decade after 1945, and the city built housing for them as fast as it could.

The result is one of the densest stretches of postwar housing in Michigan. Blocks off 9 Mile, 10 Mile and Dequindre are lined with 900 to 1,400 square foot bungalows and brick ranches, set close together on narrow lots, with a full basement under nearly all of them. North of 12 Mile, toward 13 Mile, 14 Mile and Warren Woods, the ranches spread out slightly and the lots widen, but the era is the same.

Small does not mean quick

People assume a 1,100 square foot house is a short visit. In practice it is the opposite kind of job. Compact bathrooms have more edges per square foot than large ones. Kitchens built in 1954 have narrow gaps beside the stove and the fridge that nothing has reached in years. Original ceramic tile has grout lines that need hand-work rather than a mop. Basement stairs are steep, painted and heavily used.
